Musings Vol. 5

Radio City Music Hall with marquee reading 30 Rock 20th anniversary celebration

Goodness, I’m so tired. Anyone else having a rough go of it as of late? I read (...half of) this essay. Maybe it’s that. I haven’t mused in a while so I thought I’d jot some disparate thoughts down. I also just added a Guestbook to my site, which I’m pretty keen on but not ready to post about just yet, so consider this a soft launch. Anyway, thanks for reading—here’s to better weeks ahead.

• Tupo

There is a fantastic new daily puzzle in the universe and it is called Tupo. The game is the brainchild of Josh Collinsworth, who has a long write-up of his process here (I haven’t read the whole thing yet but it’s on my list!). It is logic and number-based like Sudoku but feels far more satisfying because of the visual language and thoughtful transitions/animations. Instead of reading my clumsy attempt to describe it, you should just give it a shot. I feel like you’ll know immediately if it’s your thing.

• Ross McElwee Documentaries

I was listening to an episode of NPR’s Pop Culture Happy Hour when Aisha Harris, one of the hosts, mentioned Ross McElwee’s new documentary, Remake. She talked about how it continues his signature autobiographical style and builds on decades of his previous work, which made me curious enough to go back and watch pretty much every one of his films I could find: Sherman’s March, Time Indefinite, Six O’Clock News, and Photographic Memory (many of them are available on Kanopy). Only then did I watch Remake (available on PBS’s YouTube channel for now), and it is every bit as devastatingly sad as advertised. I’m glad I found his work. It’s introspective, refreshingly mundane, and deeply Southern in a way you don’t see on screen very often.

• 30 Rock 20th Anniversary Celebration

I was fortunate enough to go to the 30 Rock 20th anniversary celebration at Radio City Music Hall last week, and it might have been the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. What a joyous occasion. The experience left me speechless; I don’t really have much else to say. The 30 Rock subreddit was a very fun place to visit in the days after the show. 1, 2, 3
